Booster cables are a necessity

Posted on: March 2, 2011

Booster cables are a necessity for anyone who owns a motor vehicle. It is also important to know how to use a a booster and what you should do if you find yourself in need of a jump at the side of a highway. Everyone who is out on the road needs at least one reliable booster cable, because dead batteries can happen to anyone. If you do not have a jumper cable, or you are alone on the shoulder of a road, you will have to call someone you know to come help you-otherwise, you will be able to call a cop, if you have a cell phone with you.

A jumper cable is available at most discount stores for as little as ten dollars. These will have a copper coated wire and might be made of a thin rubber. Most automobile drivers are able to use these on occasion in emergencies. However, if you would feel more secure with a heavy duty jump cable, you can purchase one for 50 dollars and up. These booster cables will usually have a copper wire, and very strong rubber cables. If you are a truck driver, or part of a police force, it will probably be necessary for you to choose the best quality you can buy. Make sure that all of your cables are certified and in working condition, and read any instructions that might come with them in a manual or on the box. You should also keep your receipts in case of any defects.

If you are careful, you should not often have to worry about a dead battery. Most dead batteries are caused when the headlights of the vehicle are accidentally left on overnight, when they are not simply caused by a battery that has been worn out. Be sure to have your car battery checked regularly, and it should last up to five years. Do not leave any electricity on in your car.
Knowing the signs of a dead battery will help you determine if you should have your battery replaced. If your electric powered utilities in your automobile are not working as well as they usually do, this is a very strong sign that you could be losing battery power. If the windows are electrically powered, they might not roll up as quickly as they normally do, and your headlights might be dimmer than normal. Sometimes, though, you will have no signs of a dying battery, and you might find yourself unable to drive your car when you need to get to work in the morning, or you might even stop in the middle of the road.

Booster cables are only useful if you are able to use another car to power your battery to start your car. You will only need the power of another battery to get your car started. Once it has been started, you will need to drive to a service station immediately. If, even after you have followed all of the precautions and bought a good starter cable, you are unable to get a jump, you will have to pay for a tow truck.
